All the other creatures in the Disney jungle are computer-animated but can speak - with brilliantly rendered facial expressions that make their human-like dialogues appear natural.
The animals' voices are provided by an outstanding cast of actors. The black panther Bagheera, who tries to protect the young boy, has Ben Kingsley's voice.
Bill Murray comfortingly lends his voice to Baloo, the lazy bear who becomes Mowgli's best friend. We're referring, of course, to Walt Disney Productions' animated classic. Inspired by Rudyard Kipling's book of the same name, it told the story of a "man-cub" named Mowgli and his animal friends. The movie was released just 10 months after Walt Disney's death he passed away during its production and was the fourth-highest grossing film that year. Beginning with Alice in Wonderland in , Walt Disney Pictures has been reimagining its animated features as live-action blockbusters. Maleficent and Cinderella followed in and , respectively, while many other reboots are currently in post- or pre-production phases.
It was only a matter of time before The Jungle Book received the same treatment. It's earned universal raves, with Entertainment Weekly calling it a "wall-to-wall" pleasure.
Variety 's Andrew Barker praised Favreau, as he "never loses sight of the fact that he's making an adventure story for children—no small matter in a kid-pic landscape flooded with inappropriately gritty reboots and frenetic distraction devices.
We watched them so you wouldn't have to. Originally intended as an independent production, Disney came on board with extra financing.
Sommers' was not the story of Mowgli the man-cub. Rather, it was the story of Mowgli the man played by Jason Scott Lee. Gone were the song and dance numbers, and none of the animals spoke a word. Narrated by Colonel Geoffrey Brydon Sam Neill , viewers first met Mowgli as a 5-year-old boy alongside his father, a widowed tour guide.
Early on, Mowgli's connection to the animal world was apparent. The next day, he encountered a panther, Bagheera, who took him to a watering hole. Adopted and raised by wolves, he also befriended a bear named Baloo.
Not once did Mowgli shed tear over his loss. In fact, he didn't emote much at all—unless he was looking confused. Disney Flash forward two decades and Mowgli had seemingly forgotten what civilized life was like. That's good, but likely not good enough to expand significantly.
However, I was still hoping for more than what we got.
The Jungle Book (2016 film)
The year-over-year comparison is devastating; however, that's because the same weekend last year was the first weekend of May when The Avengers: Age of Ultron debuted. Year-to-date, 's lead has shrunk to 5.

Weekend Predictions: Kitten vs. Jungle Cat April 28th, There are three wide releases coming out this week, but none of them look like they will challenge The Jungle Book for top spot. In fact, it looks like all three combined won't come close to The Jungle Book weekend haul. Keanu is the best of the new releases and it has a shot at becoming a midlevel hit.
Mother's Day could have been a midlevel hit as counter-programming, especially with Mother's Day just over a week away. However, early reviews are hurting its chances with moviegoers. Finally there's Ratchet and Clank , which is one of those animated movies that feels like it should have gone Direct-to-Video.
As for this weekend last year Obviously is going to get crushed this weekend.
It should bounce back next weekend. More impressively, it did this with no major market openings this past weekend.
Unfortunately, next weekend is going to be damn awful in the year-over-year comparison, because of a misalignment in the weekend.
However, I think the lower end is more likely, because its reviews are going to hurt the word-of-mouth. April 21st, It's a bad week for new releases, as The Jungle Book is widely expected to dominate the box office.
The only truly wide release is The Huntsman: Winter's War , but its reviews are simply terrible. There are also three films opening in select theaters and one of them should earn a spot in the top ten. The Huntsman could double that opening, but it won't have the same legs.
